Tree sitters. Logger protests. Dying timber towns. An iconic species on the brink. The Timber Wars consumed the Pacific Northwest in the late 1980s and early1990s and led political leaders to ask scientists for a solution. The Northwest Forest Plan was the result. For most of the twentieth century, the central theme of federal forest management in the Pacific Northwest had been logging old-growth forests to provide a sustained yield of timber. During the 1970s and 1980s, however, a series of studies by young scientists highlighted the destructive impact of that logging on northern spotted owls, salmon, and the old-growth ecosystem itself. Combining this new science with newly minted environmental laws like the Endangered Species Act, environmental activists obtained court injunctions to stop old-growth logging on federal land, setting off a titanic struggle in the Pacific Northwest to find a way to accommodate conservation imperatives as well as the logging that provided employment for tens of thousands of people. That effort involved years of controversy and debate, federal courts, five science assessments, Congress, and eventually the president of the United States. It led to creation of the Northwest Forest Plan, which sharply and abruptly shifted the primary goal of federal forestry toward conserving the species and ecosystems of old-growth forests. Scientists went from spectators to planners and guides, employing their latest scientific findings and expertise to create a forest plan for 20 million acres that would satisfy the courts. The largest upheaval in federal forest management in history had occurred, along with a precipitous decline in timber harvest, and there was no going back. In this book, three of the scientists who helped craft that change tell the story as they know it: the causes, development, adoption, and implementation of the Northwest Forest Plan. Norman Johnson is a man whose passion is to strive for structure in life that he may be a trendsetter and example to his family and all who looks up to him. Born on Setember 9, 1968, Norman grew up in Donnelly Homes in the northern part of Trenton, NJ. After dropping out of high school, he began working as a kitchen helper at Trenton State College to support his new family. Realizing the importance of an education, Norman enrolled at the local community college and obtained his G.E.D. while raising his family, which at the time consisted of his longtime girlfriend and three daughters. During his spare time, Johnson enjoys focusing on his hobbies and being with family. In 1998, Norman visited Miracle Tabernacle Church with his family who were already attendees. There, he gave his life to the Lord. Knowing God had a purpose for his life, he was soon afterwards baptized. Under the guidance of his pastor, Russell Bethea, he learned and practiced the disciplines of Christianity. During a three-year wilderness journey of incarceration, his marriage of one year with his longtime girlfriend ended. Brokenhearted, Johnson continued to diligently seek the Lord, an action that sparked the curiosity of the other inmates. Beginning a Bible study, Norman was able to win many to Christ and witnessed many change their perspective on life. When he returned home, Norman continued with Miracle Tabernacle Church and began to accompany the elders as they went into the community to bare witness to the Lord's goodness and to pass out literary tracts. Two years later he was licensed as a minister to preach and teach God's Word. In 2002, Norman married his long time friend Andrea, who grew up in the same neighborhood as he. Having Bible study in their home, Norman and Andrea witnessed mighty moves of God as many gave their lives to the Lord. Johnson later enrolled in the Maranatha Full Gospel Biblical Institute where he earned an accredited combined bachelor/graduate degree in theology. Seeking a new church home in 2010, Norman and Andrea joined Kingdom Church of New Jersey under the leadership and direction of Pastor Darius Daniels where he is now the assistant leader of the I-Care Community Outreach Ministry. Today as he continues to strive, Norman works as the second assistant manager of the Smolar Group LLC. His passion to teach and encourage men and women has made him a mentor to all who are under his direction. His efforts are continually seen in his life as he presses forth to be an example of excellence.
